That famous grrrrr is just air and liquid being squeezed through your tummy by its muscles — like water gurgling down a drain. It is louder when your stomach is empty because there is no food to muffle the sound. Munchy hears a growl and takes it as a dinner invitation.

When you have not eaten for a while, your brain sends a message: "clean-up time!" Your stomach and intestines do a big squeeze to sweep out crumbs and get ready for the next meal. With no food inside, all that squeezing echoes — rumble rumble! Munchy calls it the snack-time drumroll.

Totally normal — everyone’s tummy growls, even doctors’ and teachers’! Scientists even have a fancy word for it: borborygmus (say it: bor-bo-RIG-mus — it is fun). It just means your digestive system is awake and doing its job. Munchy’s tummy growls in seventeen languages.
